The Death of Emily

I was not there the day Emily died.

I was away on a business trip.

But I wish I had been there though.

We had all been aware

that her passing was imminent.

We had in fact planned

for her doctor to facilitate her passing

just a few days prior her death.

Even with the full expectation

of this event to come,

it nevertheless was a day

that brought sadness to our hearts.

I was told in detail how that day came

by members of the family who were there

with her.

She was in obvious pain, they said.

But she still looked at them with love

and wagged her tail

as she tried to get up

to go to each of them

to lick their hands

as was her custom.

But she could not.

Tears come to my eyes

as I tried to picture this.

Jordina told me Emily was whining

and from that she knew she is asking

to go outside to go and pee.

They took her outside so that she could.

She did her business and then fell sideways

onto the concrete walkway and just lay there.

My daughter, Becky, ran outside

and wrapped her in a fluffy bath towel

and brought her into the living room.

There Emily lay, surrounded by all who loved her.

She raised her head one last time and

looked around at each of them.

She then laid her head back down

and she died.

We were babysitting another puppy at the time.

Sophia sniffed at Emily as she lay in the

make shift bed my daughter had made for her
